One Bra And One Set Of Panties by Wanda Morrow Clevenger

I worked at
The Hub
senior year
bossed by this
older lady

she worked the kitchen
wore a hairnet
I wore braids
got all the tips

it wasn’t so bad
as work goes
I had 17 years
working to my
favor

she said when
she was young
she had one bra
and one set of panties
that she had to wash
in the sink
every night

tips were good
—apron pockets
pregnant with quarters
banged
against my thighs

one night she
counted those quarters

she made me work the
night before semester
exams

I don’t think she
liked me much
