War Vets by Ryan Quinn Flanagan

I always feel bad for the war vets
made to stand out in the January cold
begging for money,
out front the big box stores
often minus a limb or two,
not because they are doing anything different
than all the other unfortunates
waving their little polystyrene cups
but because they were tricked into believing,
believing they were fighting for something
and could come back home
to something more
than this.
