A Man Has to Work by Ryan Quinn Flanagan

Going around handing out resumes.
A face full of acne and still technically a virgin.
My father telling me a man has to work even if I was still a boy.
That I was lazy and wouldn’t cut it.
Saturating the industrial park up the street with my resumes.
Many times a week.
Completely unskilled to do anything.
And I remember the women at the front desk.
Tasked with not letting anyone get by who did not have
a job order or an appointment.
The looks on their faces that wondered why
I was not in school or somewhere else.
The way they were kind enough to pretend to give my resume
a quick once over
and wait until I left to throw it away.
There is enough cruelty in the world.
This was a little less.
