Dervish by JD DeHart

Let me spin my words
off the cuff.  I’m not very good
off the cuff.
Though I’ve read Nabokov
and Vonnegut and others,
though I live in words, listen
to verbs, and have collected
them for years like precious
stones from a river, the microphone
still awaits me, empty, silent,
void of compassion or verse,
the room is vacuous except
for the raucous sound of laughter
that only exists in my mind.
