OWLS by Misti Rainwater-Lites

I’m awake and so are the owls.
Their insistent lament matches the noise of my heart.
What is a heart?
My heart is a box vibrating with noise.
It isn’t pleasant.
They would never play it on the radio.
There was a man once.
We both awoke in the same bed.
We both heard the owls.
I don’t know what his heart is
all these miles away from mine.
The noise between us
does not cease.
It isn’t pretty.
No one would buy it.
But I will die inside it.

Misti Rainwater-Lites is the author of Bullshit Rodeo. Her latest chapbook, No Guns No Knives No Disco Biscuits, is available from DevilHouse Press.
