Unleashed by Brenton Booth

The dogs of Monday
afternoon call out
my name
while loud music
shakes the walls
and the consumers
hand over money
without thought
or end for things
that won’t make
them happy
and the teenagers
screw and get
stoned wondering
when the lies will
end and truth
begin
and dissatisfied
pimps demand
more from their
exhausted and
broken girls
and the artists with
stomachs full of
inspiration dream
of success
and cashiers wonder
when their time
will finally come
taunted by a life
less attractive than
what they ever
expected
the rich driving cars
worth more than
houses
with stupid smiles
and empty lives
imagining their wealth
to mean something
yet never satisfied
the sun shining
and dogs still barking
on this Monday afternoon
home from an eight hour
shift with food and privacy
but most importantly
music
a soul full of music
loud enough to silence
even the loudest bark
in my Sydney apartment
crazy hair
four day beard
big enough muscles
and a mind that still
hasn’t conformed
still hasn’t given in
to them
even after all these
years
the dogs of Monday
afternoon
of everyday
call out my name
but I can’t hear them
now
and don’t care:
content with my lack of
perfection—
and no need to ruin it.
