The Cat With Her Ears Pinned Back by John Tustin

This is
for the cat
with her ears pinned back.

You wriggle your back half,
ready to pounce
on the twitching mouse
of my stupidity.

You raise your back half
and purr
for my attention at 2 A.M.

I know just where,
just how
to scratch.

You bare your claws
but never attack.

You bare your teeth,
but bite so softly.

Just leave me a gift
on the doorstep once in a while

and adore me
with your eyes too big

and your bowl
will always be full.

John Tustin is currently suffering in exile on Elba. His published poetry is available at
