A Lonely Love by Bill Gainer

One room
a kitchen-net
and a bath.
Six-fifty a month
her secret place
where she keeps
the little things
the memories –
one chess piece
a little silver happy-face
drawn on its side –
a pill bottle
three lipstick
cigarette butts
the lid tight –
a pillow to hold
when she’s lonely
it smells like
someone else –
and the corner of the bed
where she sits
rocks herself
and wishes
just wishes.
