This Particular Establishment by James Babbs

the waitress catches me
writing something in my notebook
and immediately
asks me what I’m doing
followed quickly by the question
if it’s okay I ask you that
and I hesitate
before making a reply
maybe
she thinks I’m some corporate spy
sent down from the district office
or something along those lines
here to write up some kind of report
about what’s been going on
at this particular establishment
and for a moment or two
I actually contemplate
going along with this story
thinking it might be kind of fun
just seeing how long
I could get away with it
but I lose my nerve
and just mumble something
about writing stories and poems
and the waitress seems okay with this
because
she takes my order
and just does her job
and doesn’t ask me
another word about it
