A Gift by Matthew J. Hall

you are a gift like a poem
written by a steady hand
concerned only by the line

you are a gift like music
your melody honours silence

you are a gift like a short story
the good kind
the tale unconcerned by conclusion

I throw the book of you
against the wall
then brush myself down
and pick you back up
and drink the pages like wine
knowing I’m not man enough
for this type of hangover

you are a gift like honesty
but I am just a boy
when it comes to truth

you are a gift like love
like the heaviest weight of pain
like grace
like sacrifice
like the bulb of repentance

you are a gift like the last word
you are a gift like art
