May 16, 1984 by James Babbs

the sun so bright I couldn’t stop
thinking about death
but why did it take me
more than 32 years to realize
Andy Kaufman died
exactly one year to the very day
after my own brother passed away
surely
this must mean something
but for the past couple of hours
I’ve been sitting here
drinking this cheap red wine
and now
I’m feeling kind of drunk
so maybe
just maybe
that has something to do with it
my hand looks kind of strange
when I start flexing my fingers
trying to make a fist
and it wasn’t so long ago
when I truly believed
everything happened for a reason
but now that I’m older
I guess I’m not so sure
