Already Gone by Michael N. Thompson

The emergency room emptied out
after time of death got called

I took hurried pictures
of your face, hands and hair

Although that was two years ago,
I’m still bleeding

When does the mourning end?

Praying to a god
that I don’t believe in
only makes it worse

This ring will rust
onto skin and bone
as originally intended

Just as I’m beginning to heal,
someone says your name out loud
and your ghost rips out the stitches

I’d soak my heart with kerosene
to burn me alive once and for all,
but I’m already gone
