I Won’t Let Monsters Rule by Linda M. Crate

hiding behind your masks
just another boy pretending to be
a man
thinking love is a game to be played,
but life isn’t chess;
doesn’t matter if you have your queen
sometimes the king still dies
i will have your head
will slay you
because you are the jabberwocky of my life—
i cannot allow monsters
to overtake the
dreamers,
and i know my heart isn’t the only one
you’ve broken;
all the rotten things you’ve ever done are
somehow not your fault
always the victim and the martyr
you fall all over yourself
in love with all of your pain and your misery—
maybe i shouldn’t have fallen in love
with you,
but my heart defies expectations and believes in every
love story until it proves itself untrue like you;
i won’t let you break anyone else
the way you did me.
