Doves by James Babbs

late Sunday morning and
the maple tree in my front yard
is filled with beautiful doves
at last count there were eleven of them
just sitting out there among
the leafless branches of the tree
I don’t remember seeing this many doves
all gathered together in the same place before
am I supposed to glean
some kind of meaning from this
but while I’m contemplating these things
a car with a loud muffler drives past and
startles the doves into flight
and I watch all those wings
fluttering
frantically against the cloudless sky
the doves rising up before flying away and
I don’t see where they all end up
I keep looking through the window
but the doves do not return
