at McDonald’s in Princeton TX by Wanda Morrow Clevenger

over pancakes
on Sunday morning
at McDonald’s
in Princeton, Texas
the husband of
an elderly woman
randomly announced
to a stranger
across the way
how his wife
was supporting
Jimmy Swaggart

he then began
to sermonize
how all those who
had the mark
on their foreheads
would be saved
when the end came
all others were
doomed

after each proclamation
his wife murmured
yes
yes
yes

the man seated
directly behind the
couple leaned
to his left
turned his head
part way and said
it is imperative
that senior citizens
regularly give
five thousand dollars
to Swaggart
if they wanted saved
from doom

he emphasized this dollar
amount a couple of times
winking at me
all the while

someone else mentioned
Swaggart’s past
prostitute sins
effectively halting
the pop-up pontification

I’m told this kind
of thing is normal
for east Texas
