Mazu by Jon Bennett

“I like your scarves,” I say
“I am Mazu,” she says,
“Goddess of the Sea!”
We’re at a bus stop
on Stockton Street
and I can tell
it’s hard work
being a sea goddess
when the ocean is full
of potholes
and the fish are UPS trucks
She waves her hands
fixed and focused
to keep the whole thing
from crumbling.
